Chapter 21

We arrived at Tine a few hours after Alamander rode ahead. His beast seemed to have no trouble increasing its speeds and I wondered if perhaps it was magically enhanced in any way. An odd creature of unknown origin, it might make an interesting addition to our own stables. How strange would it be, to ride apes instead of horses across the land? The road would have no trouble beneath their feet, nor would fallen trees block our paths. I should inquire further about such a creature once Almander’s mission was done.

But for now, I had more important things to worry about than ape creatures. The first attack on the guildhall had failed, leaving me in a poor position with Henderson Aimes. He was still in my custody, but if I had been successful in my endeavors, we’d be able to release him now, without a problem. I had spoken with him briefly before departing on my trip, informing him that he would be allowed to leave once I had finished my business in the South. What that business was, he did not know. Now that I was back, I’d have to find some way to keep him here without raising his suspicions that we were struggling.

I carefully crafted a cunning lie while riding with my partners in silence, one that would hopefully convince Henderson that he was on the losing side. Hopefully, this would buy me at the very least some more time before he learned the truth. Even if Henderson decided to flee somewhere else, to avoid the wrath of Tanders, I wouldn’t worry about him sticking around and further frustrating my plans.

The guest house where Henderson was “staying” was a two-story building, with room for guests on the top floor and guards on the bottom. There were plenty of amenities, including a dining room, a study and plenty of books and games to keep the temporarily indisposed occupied. Teresa had recommended this design, a “diplomatic prison” as she called it. One comfortable enough to keep people happy, but secure enough to keep them inside. There was also an atrium on the second floor, so the visitors could get plenty of sunlight during their stay.

I took a deep breath as I approached the door to the guesthouse. The guards posted both nodded at me and stepped aside. I raised a hand to indicate that I was going in alone. If needed, these men would escort me, but Henderson and his soldiers were far from dangerous. I opened the door and walked in to see the interior guard sitting on a chair, reading some kind of periodical. Upstairs there was the sound of dice rolling and cheers from Henderson’s men.

Henderson himself was standing in the dining room of the first floor, pacing back and forth. I walked into the archway, making enough noise with my feet to reveal myself. Henderson looked up at me, anxiety strewn across his face. Before I could say a word, he was quick to speak.
